Li-Ion Battery Testing

From consumer goods to military applications, many of today’s technologies rely on lithium-ion (Li-Ion) batteries as an power source. Bloomy Controls provides fully automated battery performance and characterization test systems; we give our customers the tools to bring Li-Ion battery cells and packs to market faster, and with confidence. Our test systems are built with commercial off the shelf (COTS) hardware, including National Instruments measurement hardware, allowing for a significant reduction in lead-time compared with traditional battery test systems.



Hardware Flexibility
Batteries range in size and specifications, from coin cells to large packs. A test system can quickly be customized for specific product testing needs. Some options include:
  • Voltage ranges: 0 to 600V
  • Current ranges: 0 to 100A
  • Measurement resolution: 16 to 24 bit
  • 0 to 200 channels (dependent on overall system power)
  • CAN, I2C, and SMBus communications
  • Temperature and strain gauge monitoring
  • Flexibility to integrate with other sensors
Battery Charge & Discharge
The application can run standard or custom battery charge and discharge profiles with the following modes of operation:
  • Constant current
  • Constant voltage
  • Constant power
  • Constant resistance (Amps/Volt)
  • Taper current charging
  • Pulsed charging
  • Reflex charging
  • Custom algorithms available
Test and Monitoring
The application allows for independent channel monitoring and testing with the following features (features vary from cell testing to pack testing):
  • Available Test / Monitoring points:
  • Open circuit voltage
  • Closed circuit voltage
  • Return voltage and time
  • Channel current
  • Internal resistance / ESR
  • Cell matching and balancing
  • Custom tests available
  • Simulate real world power profiles
  • Variable Charge / Discharge Profiles
  • Life Cycle testing
  • Simultaneous sampling up to 50 kS/s/ch
  • High impedance Kelvin connections
  • Appropriate system isolation (power specific)
