At this year's eVTOL event, BLOOMY will present the following:

eVTOL HIL Validation Testing, from Tip to Battery to Tail

Date: Tuesday, October 24th
Time: 11:20 - 11:40 am
Co-presented by: Bill Eccles, Peter Blume, and Grant Gothing

Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) validation is the quintessential technique in the testing and certification of any new aircraft or vehicle. HIL testing is used to model, simulate, and fault any component, system, condition or its environment in order to test components, subsystems, and their interactions at a system level. HIL test systems simulate everything from sensors and actuators to flight controls and engine controls all the way up to a full copper bird replica of the vehicle. Unlike other aircraft, eVTOLs also have high-voltage batteries and electric propulsion systems with highly advanced control electronics and algorithms requiring validation. In this presentation, representatives from BLOOMY® will explain the concepts of HIL simulation including the specific challenges and solutions associated with eVTOL.

  • Brief introduction to HIL validation – what it is and why it’s important for the eVTOL industry
  • The multiple levels of HIL validation testing: from component-level test to full-vehicle copper bird integration testing
  • The new challenges that eVTOL brings to the SIL: safely testing and simulating the energy storage system and controllers.
  • Commercially available solutions for eVTOL HIL Validation

Exhibits

In the exhibit hall, BLOOMY will showcase an eVTOL HIL Validation System, the Battery Simulator 1200 and the Desktop BMS HIL Test System, all based on commercially available (COTS) components. Comprised of a transformative new HIL architecture from NI and BLOOMY, the eVTOL HIL Validation System, dramatically reduces the labor, lead time and cost of bringing up a new HIL or SIL test bench, from component testing with real-sim switching to a complete eVTOL copper bird. The Battery Simulator 1200 simulates the sink/source characteristics of a battery in order to safely and efficiently test a battery management system (BMS). The Desktop BMS HIL Test System is a simple integration of the Battery Simulator 1200 in a compact form factor, enabling BMS software engineers to iteratively develop and debug their software at the convenience of their own desktop. Every BMS software developer should have one! Most importantly, BLOOMY's distinguished experts with decades of test engineering experience will be available throughout the day to discuss you eVTOL HIL/SIL validation teast applications.
